The first Step is always the hardest, but also the most important.
Before I even tell you what this all-important step is I have to preface it with some facts.
- Fact one: We have been conditioned since birth to abide by social norms that keep us 'in line.'
- Fact two: Even if you say, "I jumped that train, I don't listen to what my momma had to say about this or that," I guarantee there are still social norms you adhere to.
- Fact three: These norms influence us in the silliest ways- can we say "ship lap"??
Don't get me wrong I love shiplap, but is it really that much better now than it was 20 years ago? No, it's just now become popular, or socially acceptable to sport it EVERYWHERE. And so we do.
The first step and the number one step to living, decorating, dressing, enjoying life authentically- is to, wait for it.... let go.
Letting go of what everyone else thinks, casting off those social acceptability chains and listening to our own hearts, mind, body, and souls is the key to starting a truly authentic existence.
Confession: I don't the fit the norm. Chances are, you don't either, and guess what? That is awesome. You are Unique. The best parts about you are the parts that are not like anyone else.
A while back I had this friend. I don't have a ton of girlfriends and having a close friend meant the world to me. I have always had a very unique, vintage/ eclectic/ industrial style all of my own. As our friendship continued it became very apparent that she did not share the same decorating style as me, nor did she really approve. For the first time in my whole life on a decoration front, I admit I felt weird, different, and a little embarrassed to let my unique style show. Let me just say this, when we are not being ourselves nothing will work out. It was hard for me to stand up for my own uniqueness and not feel awkward about it.
You may be thinking, "but Shelby, it was just decorating?" Yes, but as I will say from time and time again, what we surround ourselves by will discourage or encourage us to live authentically. This is why I love art & decor, and believe them to be so important to our authentic journey.
Lone Bird Blue by Nicole Dietz-
Birds have always exemplified 'letting go' to me. We can always use a little reminder, especially such a pretty one.
Let go. I'll say it again, Let go. If you want to do ship lap because you love it- go for it. I guarantee Joanna didn't do it because everyone else did. If green velvet couches are really you- rock them full force! This ain't just about decorating, this is about your life- your authentic life.
Challenge for this week:
Break out a piece of paper. Draw a line down the middle. On the left, write three social norms that may be holding you back in life. On the right, write down three core beliefs from your heart. Your challenge this week is to practice letting go of those social norms. Don't let the pressure to do things just so get to you. Just try to let it go.
You're enough to be different, never change.
To read so much more on letting go of social pressures my favorite, kick ass inspiration is chapter 4- The Big Snooze. It is a 'must read!'
